Revell P1099B Heavy Fighter

Post  S P Hammerton on Wed May 08, 2013 12:39 pm

Hi Folks

Here's my entry for the 2013 BSB

I recently developed a passing interest in these Paper Luftwaffe projects, so this seemed a good choice.

Here is the start image, part of a set I took with Leon Sparkes' J-20 build

First job was replacing the rather softly moulded gun barrels with Micro-tubes from Albion Alloys.

The Instructions call for 9g of weight to stop tail dragging. As the space in the nose looks limited, I filled the front of the engine nacelles with Liquid Gravity.

I'm sure additional weight will be needed but this is a good foundation.

Interesting project Simon, I've never seen this before! Then again it is a paper plain What a Face and I don't know a real lot about wingy thingies.

Looking goog so far!

This was meant to be a Heavy Bomber Destroyer using the wings and tail of the Me262, and utilising the second generation jet engines.

Anyway I did the cockpit assembly a while ago.

I've seen better, but it will look fine under the greenhouse canopy.

To add some further bias I've added Liquid Gravity to the top of the nosewheel bay.

Hi Simon:

Wow! Did you take speed building lessons from Pavel Wink ? It looks very good, and just waiting for the cool Luftwaffe paint job. I was wondering though. Does the liquid gravity come with the lead shot or are they separate items? It looks very effective. Much better than mine which was just a large steel nut superglued in the front of my F-100D.

Hi Gary

Liquid Gravity is a product by Deluxe Materials and consists of thousands of tiny non-toxic spheres less than 1mm in diameter. This size allows LG to flow into tiny gaps, including between the skins of inlet ducts such as on the Kinetic T-45 Goshawk.

Once the LG is in place it's made into a solid mass by flowing in a thin CA such as Roket Hot. If there are any gaps in a space, I fill them with medium Roket Rapid before adding the LG.

And no I've not had lessons from Pavel, it's a fun simple little kit. The Goshawk - my current magazine build - is by comparison a pain in the a*s*. I nearly drop-kicked it through the window today.

Thanks Pavel, praise from Caesar indeed.

I'm just doing some general filling/sanding in preparation for priming.

Well I know nothing about aeromaplanes but it seems to me Suspect Suspect Suspect .... That if the kit manufacturer made the undermacarrage bay thingy in white metal then it would be able to act as its own counterbalancy thingy Very Happy . Maybe we can make the "Jenny and Simon Patented undercarrage bay thingy white metal aftermarket company" cheers cheers cheers

I'm in Jenny. Very Happy

Yes it's butt ugly compared with the 262 Mark, but it has been a fun build so far.

The undercarriage mounting points look seriously weak so I'm going to look at reinforcing these with some brass micro-tubes.

Hiya Simon:

That should do the trick nicely. Is the entire landing gear leg replaced with tubing, or just a short section put in the end ? I like to put in a bit at the end, and then super glue another piece that it fits into in the wing/fuselage. That usually gives me a great good strong construction that I know is never going to collapse.

I actually bored about 5mm into the leg, then added a collar of a larger tube into the u/c bays to act as a socket.

Albion Alloys supply me with packs of slide-fit tubing in varying ranges of sizes. But each set fits Russian Doll style together, making these little jobs an easy proposition.

I've just ordered a tube cutting jig from them. They're machined from alloy billet, are stunningly precise, and pretty much made to order. It's good enough that I'm actually spending money on this.

Hi Simon:

Ohhh I really really like the late war Luftwaffe camo schemes. This one is gonna be real nice to watch as it evolves.
