Captain Avigdor Kahalani's Centurion Shot KAL 1973

Post  Tankbuilder2 on Fri Feb 01, 2013 9:24 pm

Here's my first entry for this group build.

The AFV Club IDF Shot KAL 1973 kit will be used with a Modelcraft Centurion Mk III turret to create a model of the Centurion tank used by IDF* hero Captain Avigdor Kalahani on The Golan Heights during the 1973 Yom Kippur war.

The emblem on the keychain is the emblem of The Barak (Lightning) Armoured Brigade

*IDF = Israeli Defence Forces

Shalom!

Indeed. It's a great time to be interested in IDF armour with the number of recent and forthcoming releases of IDF armour kits in 1/35 STYRENE. Memg is releasing at least 3 new IDF vehicles this year.

I'm going to do the Mk III turret conversion first since that will be the hardest and most time consuming because I have to add 2 mm thick styrene to the rear sides of the turret and otherwise reshape the turret to improve it's looks.

Cheers

Shalom.

I started with the Modelcraft Centurion Mk III turret. I've added 2 mm thick pieces of styrene to the rear sides and 1 mm thick styrene pieces to the underside sides at the rear of the turret. Avigdor Kalahani's 1973 Centurion had the Mk III turret with the angled loader's hatch on the roof. The AFV Club Centurions have the Mk V turret with the loader's hatch parellel to the turret side. Thus the AFV Club turret needs to be changed to a Mk III turret to build Kalahani's Centurion. Fortunately I had a very old Modelcraft kit lying around that I could use as a donor for the Kalahani Centurion I wanted to build.

Thanks Gary.

When the joins on the white plastic are fully cured I'll grind it down close to the final shape and then blend it all into the turret with Squadron putty. After the putty cures it'll be sanding time again. Then I can start adding parts to the turret. That will probably be Sunday. While waiting on the turret I'll work some on the running gear.

Cheers

Shalom fellow IDF enthusiasts.

I sanded down the added white styrene pieces on the Modelcraft Mk III turret and added the Squadron Green Putty. Tomorrow I'll sand the putty down and hopefully the turret will be ready to continue building. I also added the front mantlet cover also from the Modelcraft kit. Remember that everything else on this tank will be coming from the AFV Club IDF Centurion Shot KAL 1973 kit.

Here are a few images of the turret with the putty on it but not sanded yet.

Thanks for watching.

Shalom.

I'll try this once more. Photobucket keeps freezing my computer when I'm trying to add image links here. I have the reboot whenever it does that. It's frustrating to say the least.

I've sanded the Modercraft Mk III turret. I decided to remove the hatch on the left side of the turret since it made sanding easier and there's a nice one to replace it with in the AFV Club kit.

Next I'll add some casting texture to the sides and end of this turret.

Rear of turret

Left side of turret

Front of turret

Right side of turret

Top of turret with AFV Mk 5 turret roof at right side of image for comparison of shape

AFV Club turret roof on top of Modelcraft Mk III turret roof for comparison

The casting texture when applied will hide the scratches from the sanding.

Cheers and thanks for looking.

PICKING UP THE PIECES.

Sorry for the delay since the last update. Some work was being done in my apartment and the workers managed to knock over my modelling work table.

I've picked up the pieces of a few models and dioramas that were on it and am now sorting out the parts so I can put what belongs where back where it belongs. What a mess. What a job.

I wanted to do something to get me back into the mood to build again so I applied some liquid cement to the sides of the turret and used a vey stiff bristle round nylon model paintbrush to create a more pronounced cast texture. I'll have photos tomorrow.

Cheers

Thank you Jenny.

I'm definitely not in your league but your models and dioramas are a real inspiration.

Thank you to all the others who also find this build of interest. Your comments are very much appreciated.

I just put a light coat of paint onto the turret to check for flaws and I think it's looking pretty good. I slso assembled the barrel evacuator onto the metal barrel.

I hope to be able to get started on the turret stowage boxes and turret rear stowage rack tomorrow.

Here are three images of the turret as it appears now.

Shalom.

I did a bit more putty work and sanding on the turret. I also assemble the three turret bins but left off their lids for the time being. The three inside of all three lids have been sanded down so that they are quite thin - no more than the thickness of their original lip. This is so that they can be attached to the bins then warmed up gently so they can be sprung and or twisted to represent battle damage. I'm going to add weld beads to the hatch on the rear of the turret. This was a hatch used for the removal of the original 20-pounder gun and it was welded closed after the 105mm gun was used. By the way, if you ever want to build an unusual IDF Centurion you can use a gun barrel and sleeve from an M-60 tank instead of the 105mm gun. The barrels were interchangeable although the breech mounts weren't interchangeable due to the different mounting systems. IDF tanks can be very hard to build as a tank of a specific time.

Pictures of my turret will follow later today.

Cheers

Re: Captain Avigdor Kahalani's Centurion Shot KAL 1973

Post  Tankbuilder2 on Mon Feb 18, 2013 4:18 pm

Shalom.

It's later in the day since my previous post. Here are some images of the turret with the bins on it, the lids sanded so they are very thin, the rear access hatch in place and the left side ammo loading hatch ready to be cemented in place. I have two of these AFV Club Shot CAL 1972 kits and thus I can work the parts on one and use the other kit to show you what the parts looked like before I changed them. Therefore there are two of each bin lids shown. The ones with the raised centre portions are the original AFV Club ones.

The side ammo loading hatch was taken from the AFV Club kit as it looked better than the one on the donor Modelcraft Mk III turret is and it can be posed open if desired after drilling a hole in the turret side. The hatch holder was cut off of the turret side close to the edge of the hatch opening frame and then sanded down until the excess plastic was gone - just like you do with resin parts. I left the hatch opening off in these images so that you can see how it looks before it's installed.

Thanks for your interest and cheers.

The yellowish area on the bin lid to the left of the side hatch shows the extreme thiness of the bin lid now.

This image should give you a good idea as to how thin the bin lids are now.

Hi TB2:

That is coming along nicely. And your thinned bin lids look like they will work really well for what you want to do with them.
