Andrew C's Build #3 StuG III Ausf G Miag March-May 1944 Production

Post  Andrew C on Sat Dec 29, 2012 1:28 pm

Here is my latest in the production line. It is DML 6581 StuG III Ausf G Dec 1943 Production, however, with a few modifications, I'm pushing the production date out to March-May 1944. I'm basing the build on this StuG (courtesy of Sturmgeschutz Vol. 2 by Muller and Zimmermann. Use of picture for discussion only)

I have been working on this a while, but haven't posted here yet Embarassed time for pictures to bring it up to where it sits currently

Addtional bits

Miag Pattern Fenders (Sourced from StuH 42 kit)

Butt welded engine deck

Late drive sprocket (sourced from CH6412 kit)

Muzzle brake (DML STILL supply only the old type muzzle brake Mad )

Friul Ostketten

ATAK Miag pattern Zimmerit

Start of build

That's where the StuG currently sits now. To be honest, I'm a little StuG'd out at the moment affraid almost 3 built since November 1st geek I'm currently working on a FAMO and Sd.Ah.116 as a break, which will probably end up with a StuG as a load on the Sd.Ah116 What a Face

Your workbench must look like the Alkett factory!

The StuG is looking good as the others, nice bit of building there.

Hi Andrew, great progress. Good job with the zimmerit, looks like a challenging task.

Hi Andrew, you did a superb job so far. I love this stug with the ostketten late war eastern front look.

I studied this particular subject, and I have some question regarding your build.
1. The engine deck:, you mentioned that you will use butt welded engine deck, as far as I understand correctly, the use of the interlocked one, provided with the kit should be correct as well?
According to the history facts book - you also work with - miag used the butt welded in between 2.43 - 6.44 and the interlocked design was introduced from 3.44. at miag.
2. The fenders: what fender style is supplied with this kit? is it any different from the StuH kit you plan to use? You mentioned a quite big stock of dragon stugs you own, is dragon using a different pattern fender than miag design with the latest smart kit generation?
3. The drive sprocket: I noticed you use a different drive sprocket, one manufactured from 1.44. sourced from another dragon kit? , you also plan to use the panzer art RE35-019 drive sprocket for the StuH, what are your opinions on that resin set, are these suitable for a miag vehicle manufactured from 1.44? Judging from the pictures the sourced dragon kit has a slightly different design compared to the one from panzer art. What are you observations about these parts versus the real sprocket design?

Best regards
Tibor

Hi Tibor

Thanks Very Happy I'm a big fan of the StuG III, would have to be my favourite AFV Cool

In regards to your questions

1. Yes, the interlock welded engine deck was introduced in 03.44 at Miag, but didnt appear on production vehicles until 05.44 Technically you could use the kit deck, but would have to be a definite 05.44 onwards vehicle. You would then need to change the roof too

2. In the 6581 kit as I've used here, only Alkett pattern fenders are included

3. DML sem to provide the best detailed drive sprockets. I've used the one from the Cyber Hobby 6412 StuG III Mid-Late production kit, and slightly modified it. I'm still struggling to find a decent reference picture of the type as modelled by PanzerArt for a Miag 01.44 onwards.

Hope that helps cheers

Andrew
