Sorry I'm Late...

Post  Dean Laughlin on Sat Nov 24, 2012 11:45 am

I've been having technical issues (Namely ME!! Embarassed ) It has taken me longer to work out this camera and posting than I would have liked. So bear with me and hopefully at the end of this post we will have some pictures. Smile
I am doing the Dragon Dec. 43 Stug III production for this build:

I will be doing it as a M.I.A.G. produced Stug rather than an Alkett build because all the parts are supplied for a M.I.A.G. Stug in the kit but it is not quite correct for an Alkett Stug.
My picture of the newspaper:

The items of interest:

Opened boxes:

All the bits:

As you can see I'm adding the Aber Barrel, Some Model Kasten SK-23 Tracks and the Stug III update. I have not found a suitable crew as yet, but the search is on. I may also add another vehicle and put it in a Diorama but haven't got that far at the moment. So hopefully this works and we are away. Smile

Dean.

Nice choice Very Happy

I've got this one in the stash with an ATAK zim set Cool

If you want a 100% accurate December 43 Miag build, you'll need to change the engine deck. The one supplied by Dragon (Interlock welded) is accurate for an Alkett produced StuG, but wasn't introduced until June 1944 at Miag. They still used a butt welded deck

Here's a pic explaining what I mean

The deck on the left has interlocked welds, on the right features butt welds

The only thing is, DML don't sell the engine deck separately, You'd have to source one from an earlier StuG III kit Shocked

Welcome aboard, Dean! Another Dragon kit builder with which to commiserate Laughing

I'm not familiar with all the factory differences so I'll be paying close attention.

No more spiders please..

Post  Dean Laughlin on Sat Nov 24, 2012 11:45 pm

I have enough without any more additions. Very Happy

Andrew, Yes I know about the rear deck, I was hoping that the Zimmerit will cover that, and if that fails then it will be one heavily stowed Stug! Suspect
Mark, Glad they helped you with the Front plate of your Flamm, It would have looked weird otherwise. Smile If the quality of Dragons instuctions is the worst to complain about then we're not going too badly. Mad
Jenny, Glad the photos turned out at all! Several times we nearly needed a new computer. Evil or Very Mad

Well I'm off to the shed before it gets too hot and wakes up the spiders.. Rolling Eyes

The Shed..

Post  Dean Laughlin on Sun Nov 25, 2012 12:05 am

I suppose now that I've worked it out, I should put some photo's up of my work area:

Left side:

Right side:

Desk for building:

Paint bench:

Before we moved into this house all my modelling stuff was done out of storage boxes, So I think I may have gone slightly overboard with it. Apart from the spiders it's great.

Some of the build..

Post  Dean Laughlin on Mon Nov 26, 2012 11:55 am

Thanks John and Simon, If my partner Trudi ever found out how much the setup cost I think she would kill me! Shocked

Like all Dragon kits we start at the bottom and work our way up:

No surprises for anyone who has done a Pz3/Stug3 before, Sanding road wheels is fun!

While I'm at it, May as well start on the ModelKasten Tracks Smile :

Some more bits and pieces to do and thats the majority of the tedious stuff out of the way. Still tossing up to do the Zimmerit as subassemblies or as one lot at end of build. Enjoy

Wow dean, that's an impressive factory erm modelling area you have there. I thought I was being organised by scrounging some shelving from work to place my stash on.

Nice choice on stuG btw pity about the weld issue on the rear deck, tbh I never knew that either. I just checked through my current builds to check if there was a spare butt-welded rear deck, alas this is isn't one of the parts that Dragon have gifted me, plenty of turret parts though...

I'm the same as the others, very envious of your set up Cool It sure helps having a dedicated area for the hobby

That's good you are aware of the welds on the engine deck Very Happy Are you aware of the other issue with this kit? They supply you with Alkett type fenders and fender mounts. I have a set of Miag type fenders and mounts in the spares box that I can send you? Fire me a PM if you're keen Smile

The rest of your build is looking good. I've never used Modelkasten tracks before. Where do you normally source yours from?

Thanks for the comments..

Post  Dean Laughlin on Tue Nov 27, 2012 11:54 am

about my build and shed. As I said before I didn't really have the space in our previous place to have everything unpacked so to have it all now is a bonus Very Happy
Thanks for the offer Andrew, I am going to fix the fenders with some scribing and leadfoil. I mainly get my MK Tracks from Hobbylink in Japan or RZM in the States. I used to get them from a guy in NZ called Peter Lord who had a website but haven't seen his site for ages. This set of pics pretty much gets me up to date.

Tracks finished:

Despurred (?) :

Time to get the soldering iron out:

So thats where I am up to at the moment. I'd best get off this thing and get out to the shed. Smile
And no Jenny I haven't seen a spider since the last one. Razz
